A Privileged Look into North Korea

photos taken by David Guttenfelder
I was struck by what a privilege it was for these photos to be taken.  Until reading the article Glimpse into daily life in North Korea, I had not realized the extent that Communist North Korea had sequestered itself.
Apparently, the few reporters and photographers that have been allowed "in" these past years have had to relinquish their cell phones and are given a very brief tour of North Korea's capital.  Writer Jean H. Lee and photographer David Guttenfelder were granted access to the countryside: a longer leash that allowed them to view the daily life of the North Koreans.  Jean Lee, a Korean-American, had visited the country many times over the years, and writes the article thoughtfully against the backdrop of memories of the Korea of his childhood.
Here is a link to the article, it's well worth your time.

  1. A very interesting post, Rachel. I'm off to check out the article now. Thank you for sharing~
I also wanted to apologize for not getting back to you sooner...I remember you mentioned you were compiling a recipe collection project. I wasn't sure of your email address, but I did not want you to think that I ignored your message. If you would like me to make a recipe and help you with that, I would be more than thrilled to do so (if of course it isn't too late)!
Thank you for coming by my blog and visiting. I truly appreciate your kind words...it means a lot.

    Have a wonderful week,
    Tammy♥
