Alpha Gamms Rock Atlanta

I've had such an uplifting week!  I spent Monday through Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta with my lovely Alpha Gams, bonding and relaxing.
The GA Tech Alpha Gamms graciously offered us their home.
Scrapbook time!  Lee Lee brought us beautiful materials to prettily arrange the past year's memories.
Isn't this a wonderful shot of Amber?  I saw the light from across the room and dove for my camera.  Friends photograph friends when they look good.
That baby was the belle of the ball.  She never wanted for a lap.
Our kind alumns brought us goodies!
Sophomores made breakfast!
Our attempt at making squirrel pancakes...

EMPOWER

Sorry the blog has been a little slow this week. I've been painting a mural for Chestatee, working, studying for my Astronomy final and was even able to squeeze in some Ace Gang time yesterday at the lake.
This next week I will be out of town.  Monday through Wednesday, I will be on Georgia Tech Campus with my Alpha Gamms for RTS.  Wednesday through Saturday I will be in Athens at the EMPOWER Retreat.  I am so looking forward to the instruction and fellowship I will be receiving there.  This summer has rekindled my passion for my own college, and I desperately want to see His kingdom come to Brenau.
Here is a blurb for the retreat:
"At Grace Fellowship, we believe God wants to see His Kingdom come to the College Campuses of the U.S. like never before, and He wants to use students to make it happen.  These 4 days and 3 nights will be a time of intense empowerment where you will be poured into, equipped and filled up, so that you can then go and make a difference at your college.  And, this will be a unique opportunity to network and fellowship with students from many different College Campuses and backgrounds.  Together, we can see the culture of our colleges shift towards the Kingdom!"
If you are in the Atlanta area, there is still time for you to sign up.

Fifth Anniversary Surprise

"Romantic" has never really been in mine and Cam's collective vocabulary.
So when he used the word to describe the surprise he had in store for me Saturday night, I was incredibly excited and intrigued.
I was told to dress up and keep out of Theta Xi's kitchen while he cooked.
All the guys teased me because they knew what Cam was cooking up for the evening and I didn't.
But I'm no secret sniffer.
I just grinned and giggled and tapped my toes expectantly as I tried to concentrate on the tv or my book.
Finally, he met me at the door with a tray covered in mysteriously tin-foiled food and told me to hop in the car.
We drove for a much shorter distance than I'd imagined, parking on the opposite side of GA Tech's campus.
It was twilight, the perfect time of day, no longer hot, but not yet chilly.
I was led, eyes closed, up, up, up many stairs.
We finally stopped and Cam had me wait while he made rustling noises.
I clenched my fists and thanked God for whatever was about to happen and for the many things that had already happened these past five years.
The rustlings stopped.
Then he took my hand and told me to open my eyes.

Deep Dish

My first night at GA Tech, Cam cooked us deep dish pizza in Theta Xi's kitchen.
Delish. We worked our way through it while watching The Green Mile.
Blackberry Izze.
He coated the crust in olive oil and parmesan.

Role-y Tunes

I love my GA Tech Theta Xi's.
I was passing through when I found the guys cutting up a role-y cooler and messing with an iPod and speakers.
That's Chip above.
Intrigued, I snapped some shots of their make-shift sound system.
These are the men who will be making our world...
That iPod case is definitely a pudding box.
They want to raise some money so that they can upgrade.  I can only assume that means they will get a leather iPod case, chrome trim and blink-y light wheels.

Ringgold Roofing

This past weekend I drove down to Tech to spend the weekend with Cam and all of our friends.  On Saturday, a group of us from Theta Xi drove up to Ringgold, GA, to roof a gentleman's house.  Ringgold was particularly affected (60%) by the recent bout of tornados,  and driving through town was a sobering sight.  An E-4 flattened Ringgold, almost every other building was damaged, or completely pulverized.  It was surreal, like driving through a movie set--but these were people's homes and businesses.
Click here for more information about this town's story.
It was an incredibly long, hot and strenuous work day, but was worth it to tangibly help someone in need.  I can now add roofing to my bag of tricks, and hope to use the skill to help more people.
I was the only girl there, and the men in charge initially overlooked me.  I was on ground patrol, picking up scraps, nails, etc.
I was there to work, and thought no job beneath me, but still longed to climb up on the roof rather than make up work for myself.  I was not going to stand around and sip tea while everyone else broke their backs!
My time came!  Unfortunately I don't have any shots, but when asked, I scrambled up on the roof and snapped line.  I also learned how to arrange shingles and nail them in.
We stayed up there all morning until lunchtime around one.  It doesn't look it, but it gets hot up on that roof, and you have to wear jeans if you want to keep your knees.
Sweat pours from every orifice, tar sticks to you, and you get burns when you accidentally brush your bare skin on the roof.
And it didn't matter.
It's very rough labor, which I love, and involved climbing (which I SUPER love.)
I was so proud of everyone for continuing to work in spite of the fatigue induced from waking up at 5AM and remaining the length of the day in the blistering heat.
We all got this dirty.  We were instructed to wear clothes that held no sentimental value to us.  Good thing, too, because my white tank will never be white again!
We snapped a group shot after we all rinsed off and put on fresh clothes.  It took a thorough shower upon return to scrub the remaining stubborn gunk off of me.
This is the gentleman we helped, he was very sweet and told me if I wanted a job in heating and air, to let him know!
All the older men in charge were really surprised and complimented me all day. They laughed and took plenty of pictures.  I wasn't trying to prove anything, I just told them that I had come to work, and that was all I did.  But their thanks were a true blessing.  Nothing felt worse than feeling incompetent that first hour.  I was grateful that Tom (in charge) trusted me to lead a team and repair this man's roof!

Fluffy Omelets

Photobucket
Cam did a fair amount of pampering to me this weekend: he cooked fluffy omelets for breakfast before we left to go to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
Photobucket
He used applewood bacon, which is thick and scrumptious.  I'm not normally a bacon girl, but I picked out every bit of it from my omelet.
Photobucket
He also added cheese and mixed peppers.

When it comes to love languages, Cam is definitely an "Acts of Service" and "Quality Time" kind of guy, and I love that about him.
